Who produces for us?
Sekem
An oasis in the desert
Sekem is an ancient hieroglyf that means “vitality from the sun”.
Sekem was founded in 1977 by Dr. Ibrahim Abouleish in the desert, outside of Cairo. He wanted to create an outstanding ecological oasis, based on biodynamic agriculture and a sustainable philosophy.
After years of hard work and lots of toil, his dream slowly came true. In the beginning of the 90’s, Sekem initiated ecological farming of cotton in Egypt, which has become a success and points out the direction for the future of our earth.
Today Sekem is a guiding light within FairTrade and ecology, and has received a number of recognitions for outstanding social entrepreneurship, culture building and agriculture. Sekem is an FLO partner.
In cooperation with GlobalFairTrade Sekem has produced the world’s first ecological and FairTrade-certified towels from Egypt.
Ecover
For the environment and the future
Ecover stands for ecological and sustainable cleaning.
Ecover was established in 1979, and was the first in the world to develop and market sustainable cleaning agents. The enterprise was established with the objective to produce cleaning products that cause the least possible damage to the environment and people, and that cleans effectively.
An example of Ecovers expertise is the research on phosphate-free washing agents. Long before the public realised the harmful effects of phosphates, Ecover had already introduced phosphate-free washing agents in the market.
Ecover is the world leader within ecological and sustainable cleaning, and produces efficient cleaning products for the professional market in two unique, specially-designed plants in Belgium and France.
What can we do for you?
We can work together with you to:
1. Profile your enterprise as a global player within the environment and Fair Trade.
2. Tailor-make ecological and Fair Trade-certified towels and bedclothes for your enterprise.
3. Alter your cleaning system to one that is ecological and sustainable.
What is wrong with traditional cotton farming?
Almost 25 per cent of all poisons, chemicals and insecticides that are used for farming, are used on the traditional cotton plantations.
The death rate of the plantation workers is alarming, the heath damages are enormous and gigantic areas of cultivable land is ruined due to the use of poisons. This also contributes to the global warming of the climate.
You as a consumer get fooled. Fooled into buying a cheap towel and bedclothes produced with poisonous agents, instead of demanding that professional players who run the textile industry farm the cotton organically, and pay the workers so they can live off their pay.
Ecological cotton: The farmers we cooperate with in Egypt, grow their cotton without using poison, eradicants or chemicals. The same goes for the production from the farm, via the spinning, weaving and colouring. The towels from GlobalFairTrade are produced in accordance to the world’s strictest ecological certification schemes, from seed to cloth.
What does Fair Trade really mean? It means that all involved in the production of a product are paid fairly. In addition, we can guarantee that all products from GlobalFairTrade are made without child labour, that the farmers have regulated working hours, and that their children have access to schools and healthcare. Our producers hold the strictest certification for Fair Trade production.
What is wrong with regular cleaning?
Most cleaning agents are created with poisons and chemicals that pollute, kill and damage our ecosystem. Water is polluted, with algae and fermentation as a result. The agents are non-biodegradable, and remain in nature as dangerous refuse. In addition, the cleaners’ health is in danger. Many cleaning agents cause allergies, and the packaging cannot be recycled.
